Case Study: Full-Stack System Recovery & Hardening
This document is the detailed, real-world post-incident report I prepared as the sole engineer responsible for a critical system failure. It outlines the 30+ hour marathon effort to restore 100% of data, eradicate deep-seated bugs, build new administrative features from scratch, and harden the security of a live production application.
Key Outcomes:
- 100% Data Restoration: Recovered all user and course data after total database loss.
- 88% Performance Improvement: Identified and fixed a critical bug, reducing page load times from 25s to <3s.
- Zero to Production Admin Suite: Built a complete Course and Policy Management System from scratch to replace insecure, direct-database workflows.
- Security Lockdown: Migrated to A new cluster, implemented IP firewalls, and neutralized the initial breach vector.
1. Executive Summary
Following a critical security incident that resulted in total database loss, a marathon 30+ hour recovery and enhancement effort was undertaken. The operation was executed in four distinct phases: immediate infrastructure triage and lockdown; a deep, full-stack bug eradication and stabilization process; the rapid development of new, critical administrative features; and a meticulous, complete restoration of all affected user and course data. The outcome was a complete success: the application was not only fully restored but was fundamentally rebuilt to be more secure, stable, and manageable.
2. Phase I: Infrastructure Triage & Security Lockdown
Objective: To stop the bleeding, establish a new secure foundation, and restore basic service connectivity.
- Action: Decommissioned the compromised database and provisioned a new, database cluster.
- Action: Implemented a strict IP Access List firewall on the new database to ensure connections are only possible from the trusted production.
- Action: Generated and securely configured new, complex user credentials for the database.
- Action: Diagnosed and repaired a corrupted database connection string in the
ecosystem.config.jsfile, resolving persistent 500 Internal Server Errors and bringing the website back online.
3. Phase II: Full-Stack Bug Eradication & Codebase Stabilization
Objective: To hunt down and eliminate the cascade of errors caused by data loss and pre-existing code issues.
- Action: Resolved a critical build failure by diagnosing a deep dependency conflict between
date-fnsanddate-fns-tzlibraries, unblocking our ability to deploy new code. - Action: Fixed multiple
Module not foundandType errorissues in the TypeScript build process by correcting incorrect file paths and resolving conflicts between backend and front-end strict type system. - Action: Re-architected the
VideoPlayercomponent, replacing a basic HTML tag with thereact-playerlibrary to fix video loading errors and implement a robust progress tracking system. - Action: Implemented "defensive coding" patterns (e.g., optional chaining) on key pages to make them resilient to missing or orphaned data from the hack, preventing UI crashes.
4. Phase III: New Feature Development (Building a Manageable System)
Objective: The original system lacked tools for content management. To solve this permanently, a full suite of admin tools was built from scratch.
- Action: Built a complete Course Management System with a new, secure admin page providing full CRUD functionality and at-a-glance statistics on user engagement.
- Action: Built a complete Module Management System for granular control over course content.
- Action: Re-architected the Policies Feature, consolidating two conflicting pages into one unified component with role-based controls (secure read-only view for users, full CRUD for admins).
5. Phase IV: Complete Data Restoration
Objective: To meticulously recreate all critical business and user data lost in the hack.
- Action: Developed and executed a series of secure, one-time administrative scripts for bulk data remediation:
- Bulk Enrollment: Enrolled all users in the required safety course.
- Bulk Certificate Generation: Generated and uploaded new, unique certificates to AWS S3 for all 24 users, restoring their lost qualifications.
- Bulk Progress Update: Updated progress records to 100% to ensure the UI correctly reflected completed status.
- Business Impact: This automated process saved dozens of hours of manual data entry and fully restored all historical training records for our entire user base.
6. Final Status & Strategic Recommendation
The application is now fully stable, secure, and operational. All data has been restored, and the system is equipped with the professional administrative tools necessary for long-term, scalable management. The incident highlighted key strategic risks, and I recommended a migration to a modern serverless architecture to neutralize future security threats and reduce hosting costs.
